Instagram, the popular image and video sharing application, will be testing a new feature that would allow one to “repost” content (posts and reels) from other accounts onto your timeline.
The feature to share content by followers of users is already present on other social networking platforms such as Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. Even Tiktok has begun testing this feature.
Meta-owned Instagram has launched this feature only on select few user profiles. The announcement of testing this feature comes just a few days after its recent declaration on testing technology that could *read people’s mind* (more for medical purposes).
A spokesperson from Meta mentioned over a mail to TechCrunch that this feature will be “similar to how you can reshare (sic. other users posts and reels) in Stories” but now you can even post it in your Feed. This way the “original creators are credited for their work”.
This feature in testing was spotted by Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, who shared a tweet of the screenshot that shows the repost feature icon. The spotted account belongs to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram.
It is still unsure whether this feature will be available to all users or only a select few. This feature is important because it would eliminate the need to use third-party applications to reshare posts, which is how it has been happening so far.
To reiterate, this new feature would allow you to repost your favourite content directly onto your Feed instead of sharing via Stories or direct messages.
The reposted content would be saved and will appear on a new “repost” tab on your profile. Just as in Twitter, Instagram users will also have the option to add their own thoughts and opinions while reposting.
