Rich snippets are search results that show extra details such as star ratings, price, stock status or delivery information. For an online store they make listings stand out and pre-qualify shoppers before they click. Here are the ones that matter most for ecommerce and how to earn them. They are standard on every store built by our ecommerce website design team.
How rich snippets work
Rich snippets come from structured data: code (usually JSON-LD) on your page that describes it in a format search engines understand, using the vocabulary from schema.org. Adding the markup makes your page eligible. Google decides whether to show the enhancement based on quality and relevance, so there's no guarantee, but without markup you're unlikely to get it.
The most valuable ecommerce rich results
1. Product snippets: price, availability and ratings
Product structured data can show price, stock status and review stars directly in results. Key properties:
name, image, descriptionofferswithprice, priceCurrencyandavailabilityaggregateRatingandreview, when you collect genuine reviews on the page- Identifiers such as
sku,gtinandbrand
2. Merchant listings
For pages where shoppers can buy, richer merchant listing markup can make products eligible for shopping experiences in Google Search. Add shipping details (shippingDetails) and return policies (hasMerchantReturnPolicy) so delivery costs and return windows can appear. Pairing this with a Google Merchant Center feed widens your reach further. See our guide to Google Shopping for ecommerce brands. They also feed Google Shopping free listings.
3. Review snippets
Star ratings attract attention and build trust. Google only shows them when reviews are genuine and visible on the page. Self-serving reviews about your own business on your homepage aren't eligible, but product reviews from customers are. Here is how to write product reviews that Google rewards.
4. Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumb markup replaces a long URL with a readable path such as Home › Home Decor › Cushion Covers, showing searchers where the page sits in your store.
5. Organisation and site name
Organisation markup helps Google show your preferred site name and logo, which reinforces your brand in results.
6. Video
Product demo videos with VideoObject markup can appear in video results and key-moment snippets.
What about FAQ and HowTo snippets?
Google has scaled these back. FAQ rich results now show mainly for well-known government and health sites, and HowTo rich results have been retired. FAQs are still worth having on product and category pages because they answer objections and help shoppers, but don't expect them to change how your listing looks.
How to add structured data
- Shopify and WooCommerce: most themes and SEO plugins add basic product markup. Check that it includes price, availability, reviews, shipping and returns, and fill the gaps with an app, plugin or custom code.
- Custom stores: add JSON-LD in the page template, generated from your product data so it always matches what's visible.
- Keep it accurate: markup must match the page. Showing a different price or fake reviews in structured data can lead to a manual action.
How to test and monitor
- Run key pages through Google's Rich Results Test.
- Validate against schema.org with the Schema Markup Validator.
- Monitor the Enhancements and Shopping reports in Google Search Console for errors and warnings.
- Recheck after theme or plugin updates, which often break markup.
FAQs
Do rich snippets improve rankings?
Not directly. They improve how your listing looks, which can increase click-through rate and bring more qualified shoppers. Ranking itself depends on the fundamentals covered in our practical SEO guide and delivered by our SEO services.
Why isn't Google showing my rich snippets?
Common causes: errors in the markup, missing required properties, content that doesn't match the page, or Google simply choosing not to show them for that query. Check Search Console first.
Can I add review stars for my whole store?
Not on your own homepage or service pages. Review snippets are for specific products (and some other item types), using genuine reviews shown on that page.
