Local SEO Checklist for Indian Businesses: 25 Steps to Rank in Your City

A 25-step local SEO checklist for Indian businesses: Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, location pages, schema and tracking to rank in the map pack.

When someone searches "dentist near me", "CA in Andheri" or "interior designer in Bangalore", Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. Getting into that map pack, and the results below it, is what local SEO is about. Use this checklist to make sure you've covered the essentials.

Google Business Profile

  1. Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com.
  2. Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories.
  3. Use your real business name; adding keywords to it breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
  4. Add your exact address and pin, or set a service area if you visit customers.
  5. Add accurate hours, including holiday hours for Diwali and other festivals.
  6. Write a helpful description covering what you do, who for, and the areas you serve.
  7. List your services or products with short descriptions and prices where possible.
  8. Upload real photos: storefront, interior, team and work, and keep adding them.
  9. Post updates regularly: offers, events and news.
  10. Answer questions in the Q&A section, and add common ones yourself.

Reviews

  1. Ask every happy customer for a review, with a direct link sent by WhatsApp or SMS.
  2. Reply to every review, positive and negative, politely and promptly.
  3. Never buy or fake reviews; Google removes them and can penalise your profile.

Your website

  1. Show your name, address and phone (NAP) on every page, usually in the footer, exactly as on Google.
  2. Create a page for each main service, mentioning the city or areas you serve naturally.
  3. Create location pages if you have several branches, each with unique content, address, map and photos.
  4. Embed a Google Map on your contact page.
  5. Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your address, hours and phone. Our guide to rich snippets and schema explains how structured data works.
  6. Make it fast and mobile-friendly; most local searches happen on phones.
  7. Add click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons so mobile visitors can reach you instantly.

Citations and links

  1. List your business on Indian directories such as Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (for B2B) and industry-specific sites, with identical NAP details.
  2. Fix inconsistent listings, such as old addresses or phone numbers.
  3. Earn local links and mentions through local news, associations, sponsorships and partnerships. Avoid paid link schemes; read why buying backlinks backfires.

Content and social

  1. Publish locally relevant content: guides, case studies and FAQs about your area and customers. Our local digital marketing tactics post has ideas.
  2. Stay active on Instagram and Facebook with location tags and consistent details. See our tips for promoting your local business on Instagram.

Track your results

  • Google Business Profile performance: searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Google Search Console: queries and pages bringing local traffic.
  • Call and WhatsApp tracking: know which enquiries came from search.
  • Rank checks from your area: map results vary by the searcher's location, so check from different neighbourhoods.

What affects local rankings most

Google weighs three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, links, mentions and overall reputation). You can't change distance, so focus on relevance and prominence.

FAQs

How long does local SEO take?

Profile improvements can show results in weeks. Building reviews and authority to outrank established competitors usually takes three to six months.

Can we rank in areas where we have no office?

The map pack strongly favours proximity. For other areas, focus on service pages and content that rank in regular results.

Should a service-area business show its address?

If customers don't visit you, hide the address and set service areas instead.
