Most shoppers on Amazon.in never scroll past the first page of results. If your product isn't there, it barely exists. Amazon SEO is the work of making your listings the most relevant and the most likely to sell for the searches your customers make. Here's how it works and what Indian sellers should focus on.
How Amazon search ranks products
Amazon's goal is simple: show products that shoppers are most likely to buy. Its ranking broadly weighs two things:
- Relevance: how well your title, bullets, description, backend search terms and category match the search.
- Performance: click-through rate, conversion rate, sales velocity, price competitiveness, availability, reviews and returns.
Unlike Google, where links and content depth matter, Amazon rewards listings that convert. A relevant listing that doesn't sell will drop; a listing that sells well will climb.
1. Start with keyword research
- Type your main product term into Amazon's search bar and note the autocomplete suggestions.
- Look at the titles and bullets of top-selling competitors.
- Check search term reports in Seller Central if you run Sponsored Products ads; they show what shoppers actually typed before buying.
- Include Hindi-English (Hinglish) terms, regional names and common misspellings shoppers use, for example "bedsheet" and "bed sheet".
The principles are similar to keyword and intent research for Google, applied to buyers who are ready to purchase.
2. Write a title that ranks and gets clicked
Put the most important keyword near the start, followed by brand, key feature, size, material, colour and quantity. Follow your category's style guide on length and format. Avoid all caps, promotional phrases like "best price" and keyword stuffing, which can get listings suppressed.
Example: "Cotton Double Bedsheet with 2 Pillow Covers, 210 TC, King Size, Floral Print, Blue – BrandName".
3. Use bullet points to sell
- Lead each bullet with a benefit, then support it with the feature.
- Answer the questions shoppers ask in reviews and Q&A: size, care, compatibility, what's in the box.
- Work in secondary keywords naturally.
4. Fill in backend search terms
Backend search terms are hidden keywords that help Amazon match your product to searches. Use them for synonyms, alternate spellings and regional terms that don't fit in your title. Don't repeat words already in the title, don't use competitor brand names, and stay within the byte limit Seller Central shows for your category.
5. Invest in images and video
- Main image on a pure white background, filling most of the frame.
- Lifestyle images showing the product in use.
- Infographic images with dimensions, features and comparisons.
- A short product video where your category allows it.
Better images lift click-through and conversion, which in turn lifts ranking.
6. Use A+ Content
Brand-registered sellers can add A+ Content: rich images, comparison charts and brand stories below the listing. It doesn't usually affect keyword ranking directly, but it improves conversion, which does.
7. Build reviews the right way
Reviews influence both ranking and conversion. Use Amazon's "Request a Review" button and the Vine programme where eligible. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ones; Amazon removes them and can suspend accounts. Our post on product reviews explains why genuine reviews matter across platforms.
8. Price, stock and fulfilment
- Stay competitively priced within your category.
- Avoid stock-outs; they hurt sales velocity and ranking.
- Consider Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) or Easy Ship for Prime-eligible, fast delivery, which shoppers favour.
9. Use ads to kick-start ranking
New listings have no sales history. Sponsored Products ads on your main keywords can drive early sales, which helps organic ranking. Then reduce bids as organic positions improve.
10. Track and improve
- Monitor organic rank for your top ten keywords.
- Watch sessions, conversion rate and Buy Box percentage in Business Reports.
- Test new main images and titles one at a time.
Beyond Amazon
The same principles apply on Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa and other marketplaces, each with its own rules. Many brands also build their own store for better margins and customer data. FAQs
How long does Amazon SEO take to work?
Listing improvements can show results within weeks, because Amazon re-evaluates listings constantly. Building sales history takes longer.
Do external links help Amazon ranking?
Traffic from outside Amazon, such as social media, influencers and email, can lift sales and therefore ranking. Influencer marketing is a common way to drive it.
Should we write different content for each marketplace?
Yes. Adapt titles and descriptions to each platform's rules and audience rather than copying them across.
