When shoppers search for a product, Google shows product listings with images, prices and store names, often before regular results. Getting your products there is one of the highest-intent channels an online store can have, and part of it is free. Here's how it works and how to set it up properly. We set this up for every store we build through our ecommerce website design service.
Free listings vs Shopping ads
- Free product listings: products from your Merchant Center feed can appear in the Shopping tab, Google Images, Search and other surfaces at no cost per click.
- Shopping ads (paid): the sponsored product listings at the top of results, run through Google Ads (often as Performance Max campaigns).
Both use the same product feed. A well-optimised feed improves free visibility and lowers the cost of ads if you run them. If you advertise beyond Google, compare the best programmatic advertising platforms.
The three stages of product search
Shoppers rarely buy on the first search. They tend to move through three stages, and your listings should serve each one: Genuine ratings help at every stage; see how to write product reviews Google rewards.
- Discovery: broad searches like "linen cushion covers". Strong images, clear titles and competitive prices win attention.
- Consideration: comparing options, reading reviews and checking delivery. Ratings, shipping details, return policies and product detail pages answer these questions.
- Decision: branded or specific searches like "[your brand] linen cushion cover beige". Accurate stock and price, fast pages and a smooth checkout close the sale.
Setting up Google Merchant Center
- Create a Merchant Center account and verify and claim your website.
- Add business information: shipping costs, delivery times and return policy.
- Add products, via a Shopify or WooCommerce integration, a scheduled feed file, or the Content API for larger stores.
- Fix any disapprovals shown in the Diagnostics section.
- Opt in to free listings, and link Google Ads if you plan to advertise.
Optimising your product feed
Your feed is your listing. The most important attributes: Your site should mirror the feed with ecommerce rich snippets.
- Title: lead with what the product is, then key attributes: brand, type, material, colour, size. "Handwoven Cotton Cushion Cover 16x16 Beige" beats "Serenity Collection #4".
- Images: high resolution, the product clearly shown, no promotional text or watermarks. Add extra images and lifestyle shots as additional images.
- Price and availability: must match your website exactly, or products get disapproved.
- GTIN, brand and MPN: include identifiers where they exist; they help Google match your product.
- Product category and type: accurate categorisation helps you appear for the right searches.
- Description: clear, factual and keyword-rich, without promotional claims.
Help your website support your listings
- Add product structured data with price, availability, reviews, shipping and returns. See the best ecommerce rich snippets.
- Collect genuine product reviews; ratings can appear on listings.
- Make product pages fast on mobile; most shopping searches happen on phones.
- Keep stock levels in sync so you're not sending shoppers to sold-out items.
Common reasons products get disapproved
- Price or availability mismatch between feed and website.
- Missing shipping or return information.
- Images with watermarks, borders or promotional overlays.
- Restricted products or policy violations.
- Landing pages that are slow, broken or require login.
