37. What is Keyword Density ?

Keyword density is the number of times a keyword or phrase appears on the content of a web page as a percentage of the total number of words.

From an Search Engine Optimization perspective, keyword density is used to understand how relevant is a page for a specified keyword or keyword phrase. Keyword density is one of the search engine ranking factors. Hence usage of keywords on a webpage needs to implemented properly. Using excessive number of keywords or having high keyword density may lead to penalty, resulting in drop in search engine rankings.

To understand this better, let's look at an example - if your Web page has 500 words on it, and you have a keyword phrase on the page 25 times, then the keyword density is 5% of the total no of words.
