31. What is FTP ?

FTP is an abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is used to transfer or exchange files between computer accounts, transfer files between an online account and a desktop computer, or access data or software stored servers.

For a website owner, the simplest use of FTP is to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server. These could help web sites transfer files or large files which cannot be emailed.

Thus the most common use for FTP is to upload web pages and other documents from a computer to a public web-hosting server. FTP uses separate control and data connections between a computer and the recipient server. FTP users have to authenticate themselves using a login method by way of a username and password. There is a way to connect anonymously to the server too, if the server is configured to allow such access.

While most web hosting panels have built in FTP to upload and download files, user may also use third part software like cuteftp, filezilla etc
